There’s a reason they say the plumber’s house has the worst pipes—when you’re busy fixing everyone else’s, your own tends to get neglected.
I spend so much time helping others with their social media, marketing and writing stories that my own digital home has been left a little—okay, a lot—outdated. Between client projects, deadlines, and juggling All.The.Things., updating my own site just kept slipping down the to-do list.
But hey, this isn’t a confession—it’s a fresh start. Consider this post a bit of a reset and a reminder that even the people behind the scenes need to hit refresh sometimes.
So what have I been up to lately?
I’m still working full-time as the Social & Digital Media Manager for JT International/Tough1. It’s been a refreshing ride—working with great people and diving deeper into the ins and outs of the equine equipment and tack industry than I ever expected (or maybe even wanted!) to.
The position doesn’t demand too much from me, which I truly appreciate, but it still gives me room to take on more when I’m feeling inspired. Over the past year, I’ve learned a ton about video production and editing, and collaborating with our brand manager on fresh ideas is always a creative spark.
I keep up with trends on TikTok and Instagram, wrestle with the ever-changing algorithms, and I’m learning to be a little braver about trying new things—because hey, it’s just digital. You can always delete and start over.
My freelance writing career is still going strong, even 20 years later (that’ll be another post). My current clients include: NRCHA Magazine, NRHA Reiner, The Equine Chronicle, Young Rider, Horse Illustrated, Western Life Today and Midwest Harness Report. I’ve started contributing to MyNewHorse.com and am writing a lot for Tough1 as part of my in-office full-time gig.
During my contract tenure with the American Horse Council (AHC), I proposed and produced their podcast, while also being a co-host. It was a wonderful experience working with the Horse Radio Network, Glenn and everyone, as I learned the ins and outs of interviewing someone “live” and not just on a digital voice recorder for me to transcribe later. Podcasting is definitely something I’d love to tackle again, if the right opportunity came around.
All of this to say I may seem extremely busy, but I love everything that I do. I love being able to tell stories through articles, videos and social media posts. I love connecting with businesses and people, and connecting people with businesses. It’s crazy how, 20 years post-graduation, I have been able to grow and morph my career and my business in so many ways that’s still related to one thing: Telling Stories.
Oh, yeah…and there’s one other thing. My life outside of journalism/marketing.
I’m in the depths of my second year as the Softball Commissioner for the local youth sports corporation in my hometown. I started as an assistant coach three years ago, and now I manage 19 teams and work with the school system and local sports campus, as well as families and businesses to help the sport of softball grow. Softball isn’t a sport I grew up playing, nor really paying attention to, but I have grown to love it. And this was all spurred on by my daughter picking up the sport starting in T-ball six years ago. I work hard to make sure that the girls aren’t over-shadowed by the boys’ sports, and that we get every chance possible to get exposure, the right equipment and the right training. It’s a passion project of mine. There may be times I have to decline an assignment from an editor because I know I won’t have the time to make deadline (especially during the spring season), but that’s part of growing up and learning boundaries.
But I wouldn’t change it for the world.
So, on top of all of this, I still have the family farm, dog shows (though that has slowed down a lot lately) and Miniature Horse shows. Aubrey is in her second year of 4-H and her 10th year of running my life.
But I wouldn’t change it for the world.
So, if you think the silence on my website and my own personal social media means I’m not busy, it’s the exact opposite.
But, I’ll try my best to do better about promoting my biggest project: Myself.
